Annual Seminar and Instruction from our Esteemed Shirfu 2018

—-

On behalf of all of the members of the Los Angeles Shaolin Wugong & Taiji Academy, I would like to thank Shifu Dou Wanchun for his excellent seminar given this February 2018. We all learned so much that our minds are replete and we are all gratefully exhausted.

Shifu prefaced the seminar with a regular class in which he corrected forms and explained how to self-correct and train better to develop proper 功夫 Gōngfū. He used his tried and true clapping method, in which the class performed one move or series of moves which were then corrected and refined in great detail. Even my classmate Gianni Scatoloni and I who had studied many of these forms over many years learned new moves and techniques and corrected moves that had drifted astray. Bábù, and the first Luóhànquán learned at a previous seminar.

During the 6 seminar days over two and a half weeks, Shifu taught forms from two different styles: 大八極 Dàbājí and 第二路羅漢拳 Dì’èrlù Luóhànquán (Luohan 2). We had previously learned 小八極 Xiǎobājí and Luohan 1 and the new forms he taught added dimension and technique to our knowledge of those styles. The Dàbājí and Dì’èrlù Luóhànquán were each learned in one day giving us time to review more old forms. I am extremely proud that our smart students learned these new forms so quickly and with such enthusiasm due to Shifu’s expert and concise teaching. On the Sunday seminar days we learned the Yang two-person Taiji, the 揚式太極拳拆 Yángshì Tàijíquán Chāi. We did not have enough time to learn this complicated and detailed form to perfection, so Shifu is kindly sending us video from the Czech Republic to help get this form down. He is not only a great teacher, the best and most knowledgeable student of our grandmaster Chan Kowk Wai, but he is extremely generous and thorough in his teaching. His goal is to have us learn the beautiful forms in our traditional lineage and holds nothing back.

I express once again our gratitude to Shifu Dou Wanchun for an outstanding seminar.
